Captain Tiffany N & Captain Deb L. work with Captain Mary

Captain Mary S

N CA, ID, WY
Mary has been on the water much of her life as a powerboat and fishing enthusiast. In 1980 she began to sail and loved it. She began teaching sailing in 1984, holds a 100T USCG license, has run youth programs as part of her work for 15 years, became the first woman Instructor Evaluator for ASA in 1996 and remains very active as an I.E. She helped write the small boat program and continues to aid in program development for ASA. She was instrumental in getting ASA courses accredited within the CSU college system. She has sailed San Francisco Bay, the Delta, California Coast, Puget Sound, SF to Hawaii and back, along the shores of Texas, Great Lakes, Florida Keys, and Baja California, around the isles of the Caribbean and Tahiti.

From a power boating family changed over to sailing in 1980. Over the next 4 years, sailed with friends and the Oceanic Society. Was conscripted to teach spinnaker and intermediate sailing for the Oceanic Society after taking just one spinnaker course from them. At that time, she was a VP of Marketing and Training for a small spin-off company associated to CIS of Mill Valley, owned by well know multi-hull record setting sailor Peter Hogg. Teaching sailing started as a balance to a high tech stressful job. Slowly sailing became a higher priority. Changed to a Systems Analyst to have more time to sail. Began her own sailing school in 1987 and by 1991 let go of the corporate world other than to host corporate team training.

She has continuously held a USCG Captain’s license and ASA instructor certifications - since 1985. In 1997 became the first woman ASA Instructor Evaluator in order to developed a college program for California State University of Monterey Bay. From that position successfully submitted ASA curriculum for accreditation for the CSU system.  In 1998 moved back to the Bay Area to work with Dawn Riley and stayed to work with the City of Oakland to help put together the Jack London Aquatic Center. Currently hold a  USCG 100-ton near coastal Master’s

She used to dive and remains an avid fan of snorkeling. She is a photographer, published writer about boating and fine cuisine. As an Instructor Evaluator for ASA, she flies about the country to run clinics for qualified instructor candidates as well as hosting clinics at her facility.
